AWAKENING Debuts New Acrobatic Sequences

More than two years since a major overhaul, Wynn Resorts’ AWAKENING still fights an uphill battle. The large-scale production continues to wow with its visuals and physical performances, yet fails as a cohesive tale. Is it a dance spectacular? A storybook fable come to life? An attempt at avant-garde theater, Vegas-style? Not even the creators seem to know.

VEGAS 411 was recently invited to experience the latest iteration of AWAKENING. New variety acts have been added in an attempt to lure audiences back…or have them visit for the first time. Alas, it appears that the mega-expensive production clings to the same hobbling flaws described in our previous viewing experience.

Instead of focusing on the hackneyed script, horrible dialogue, and sequences that still don’t work, the new circus acts serve as a distraction. While impressive on their own, they add nothing to the overly complex storyline. Performers enter existing scenes, present their specialty act, depart, and the plot resumes. It’s all very awkward.

The biggest problem with AWAKENING lies in its concept. Narration by Anthony Hopkins tells us that all life is at stake and time is running out for a solution. But….let’s pause every few minutes for singing, magic tricks, jokes, and acrobatics. The very first dance sequence obliterates any sense of urgency for the quest. If the protagonists don’t fear a threat, why should we?

“Some impressive new acts have been added to AWAKENING. Alas, the awful script, childish characters, a terrible “Air Realm” number, and an awkward combination of actual speaking and pre-recorded dialogue remain. AWAKENING has the potential to become a terrific show, yet it stubbornly refuses to evolve. Worth seeing for the visuals, sound, costumes, and cast. But the fantasy plot line and overly verbose storytelling make it a struggle to stay awake.” – Sam Novak, VEGAS 411

AWAKENING performs Tuesday through Sunday at 7 pm and 9:30 pm. Tickets can be purchased here.

THE CRAFT’D Premieres at Majestic Repertory Theater

Behind this simple shop front, a world of wonder awaits. It’s the realm of Troy Heard, the dynamo behind Majestic Repertory Theatre. Heard and a crew of gifted artists…actors, musicians, set and lighting designers, writers, costumers, and more…continually transform this black-box space into a universe of amazement.

THE CRAFT (1996) stars Neve Campbell, Fairuza Balk, Robin Tunney, and Rachel True

Majestic‘s latest production is THE CRAFT’D, an unauthorized musical parody of the 1996 hit flick The Craft. You don’t have to be a fan of the teen-witch drama to appreciate everything about THE CRAFT’D. That “everything” includes a live band, go-for-broke performances, pop culture references, laughs galore, and a playlist that’s a ’90s kid’s dream.

THE CRAFT’D cast (L to R) – Malia Rae, Joey Derby, Samantha Souza, Ray Winters, Katie Marie Jones, Aurora Murphy, and Janelle Catherina

THE CRAFT’D performs Thursday through Saturday at 8 pm until November 15th. Tickets start at $49.95 and can be ordered here. The show is intended for mature audiences. Due to the immersive nature of the performance, no late arrivals will be admitted.

DiscoShow Celebrates First Year at Linq Hotel

From flying whales and witches, we head to LINQ HOTEL for the first anniversary of Spiegelworld’s DiscoShow. Yes, we’ve been there a lot lately, but why not? How can you pass on a guaranteed good time?

Television host JJ Snyder loves a good deejay…

Creator Ross Mollison (above) invited friends, fans, fellow creators, and members of the media to express his gratitude for their continued support.  Free cocktails and trays of “Disco Fries” weaved their way through the party, as did afro-tastic roller skaters and sexy dancers. But first, there was a performance of DiscoShow itself:

DiscoShow performs Wednesday through Sunday at 7 pm and 9 pm. Get tickets here. And check out the VEGAS 411 review by following this link.
