Las Vegas Mixtape v40: Alien Rave, Vegas’ Second Chinatown, and Consignment Deals

Track #2: ShangHai Taste @S Rainbow Blvd

It was wonderful to return to ShangHai Taste on S Rainbow in the southwest, having not been back since it opened in June 2024 as the spinoff of the original Chinatown Vegas location. The restaurant—easily among the best Chinese eateries in Vegas—was co-created by Chef Jimmy Li and Joe Muscaglione.

My guests and I had a sumptuous feast which included four new menu items (out of an impressive 16!) that are exclusive to the Rainbow location: Garlic Steamed Shrimp with Glass Noodles, Shanghai Baby Shrimp, Shanghai Style Pork Yuxiang, and Shanghai Black Pepper Beef—the latter of which instantly seduced me with its silky texture.

The newer ShangHai Taste is in Vegas’ “second Chinatown,” where the equally excellent Weera Thai also holds court. It’s a bustling stretch on Rainbow south of the 215, filled with Asian businesses that are truly worth exploring. (It helps if you pick a plaza, get out of your car, and walk around.) Notably, ShangHai Taste also recently opened a spot in Dallas. It’s exciting to see a Vegas-originated eatery spread its wings elsewhere.
