Track #1: “Galactic Zoo” @AREA15

In a politically divisive week that recalled the famous line “The center was not holding”—from Joan Didion’s 1968 book “Slouching Towards Bethlehem”—I needed to free my mind, body, and soul alongside other revelers at the “Galactic Zoo” extravaganza at AREA15 on September 13.
The house/techno hoedown—billed as an “Intergalactic Alien Rave”—was primarily held outside on a beautiful Vegas night at the venue’s massive A-Lot. It was visually highlighted by colorful art installations and roving performers who were eye-poppingly dressed like creatures from another planet. They made me think, “take me with you, please.”
As John Lennon once sang, “Nothing to get hung about.” Just dig the sci-fi-themed eye candy. (Image: Vegas 411)
It felt good for this mainly rock guy to reconnect with electronic dance music, allowing me to insert myself into the percolating rhythms provided by headliners Laszewo, TELYKAST, and Bodies And Beats; create my own mental narrative; and slip into a world free of madness.
“Galactic Zoo” was perfectly timed to celebrate Area 15’s fifth anniversary. The ever-expanding entertainment/art district opened on September 17, 2020, in the first year of COVID, and its mind-bending attractions helped visitors rise above pandemic fear. I want to give a big shoutout to AREA15’s many progressive minds who operate a true creative sanctuary. It is one of the happiest places on Earth—and long may it run.
