Track #5: Around Town Medley, Part Two

Is time running out for everyone? At the reliably provocative Recycled Propaganda gallery/store in the Arts District, I caught up with this striking couple and they had lots to say on the subject. Recommendation: cue up David Bowie’s 1972 apocalypse-themed song “Five Years”: “We’ve got five years, my brain hurts a lot/Five years, that’s all we got.”

Walking around Downtown Summerlin on a recent Thursday night after dinner at local favorite Trattoria Reggiano, I saw the rehearsal for the annual “Parade of Mischief” presented by Universal Horror Unleashed. The Halloween “spooktacular” runs every Friday and Saturday from 6-7 pm through October 25. Expect to see elaborately costumed dancers and themed floats, including a new “Wicked”-inspired one. Nice to hear an interpretation of the Rolling Stones’ anthem “Paint It Black” utilized as the music for one of the performances. Darkness never gets old.

I’ve been hosting “People Need People” mixers here since 2021; I was originally inspired to create afternoon social events at restaurants that railed against the isolation brought on by the pandemic. For the past few years, the location has been Laguna Pool House & Kitchen, on the sixth floor of Palms Place, where master Chef Luke Palladino’s diverse global cuisine has brought joy to many. The restaurant is sadly closing on October 12, along with two others, Vetri Cucina and Mabel’s BBQ, at the adjacent Palms.

It was bittersweet to assemble many Vegas folks (from the arts, hospitality, and philanthropy fields) for the mixer’s swan song at Laguna. It was a grand send-off with over 70 people in attendance, enjoying each other, the paccheri pasta with chicken, Asian chopped chicken salad, and truffle mushroom pizza, along with gorgeous views of the pool outside. People do need people—and, well, great food too.
