Track #4: La Mona Rosa @Downtown Vegas
It’s not every day that you’ll spot a neon pink monkey—but remember, you’re in Vegas. (Image: Vegas 411)
Looking for a terrific restaurant downtown that’s right near buzzy spots like Discopussy and Fremont Country Club? La Mona Rosa is your place, and you can’t miss it, thanks to the signature pink neon monkey holding onto the exterior.
Located just around the corner from Fremont St East in ever-growing downtown Vegas, the Mexico City-inspired restaurant and bar on 6th Street is the place to go for culinary thrills, colorful lighting, and a jumping atmosphere.
“All aboard for funtime,” to quote Iggy Pop. (Image: Vegas 411)
Executive Chef Isidro Marquez-Castillo—who was born and raised in Puebla and moved to Vegas when he was 18—creates one deliciously authentic “hit” after another. The man draws on the knowledge he accumulated from his travels throughout central Mexico, along with his family recipes. And we’re all the better for it.
What are you waiting for? This queso fundido is truly wondrous. (Image: Vegas 411)
You know you’re in the right place when the corn chips, fire-roasted salsa, and house-made guacamole—all excellent—set the tone for the “hits” to come. Start with appetizers like the flautas, with pulled chicken breast, and the show-stopping queso fundido, with chorizo, poblano peppers, and (why not?) “a touch of tequila”?
There are 11 entrees to choose from, including the chicken enchiladas Suizas, which were good but upstaged by the “Conchita Pibil”—that’s the slow-roasted pork in an achiote citrus marinade. It’s wrapped in a banana leaf and served with pickled onions and corn tortillas that are “made from nixtamal ground in-house.” Details like that are everything.
