BRICK HOUSE - The Commodores Story Comes to Planet Hollywood
Thomas McClary and a powerhouse cast bring funky hits to SAXE Theater...
If there's one genre of music that's underserved in Las Vegas, it's "funk". We have plenty of rock, Motown, the eighties, The Beatles, Michael Jackson, and Sinatra. But where are those funky jams we grew up on? David Tatlock and The Soul Juice Band get down like nobody else can, and Anthony James' The Funk Jam has been partying around town for years. But when it comes to resident productions....fans have been limited to Westgate's Kool and the Gang. That is, until this week.
BRICK HOUSE is a new musical created by Thomas McClary, founder of The Commodores. Billed as "The Story Behind The Music", the show promises to take you on a trip down memory lane. Featured songs include "Easy", "Three Times A Lady", "Sail On", and of course, the title hit from 1977.
McClary will share backstories as he details his musical journey through the decades. The Eustis, Florida native has assembled a collection of musicians and artists to relive the exciting tale of The Commodores. Perhaps the highest-profile cast member is Mychael Pollard, who excels in keyboards and vocals for THE JETS 80s and 90s Experience at V Theater.

The Commodores was one of the most influential Motown groups of the seventies and early eighties. McClary is credited with creating their distinctive sound. His work on "Easy" has been described as "one of the best guitar solo performances of all time" by Rolling Stone Magazine's Dave Thompson. Along with being a guitarist, he's a vocalist, songwriter, and record producer. That sets the expectations for BRICK HOUSE pretty high, indeed. The history of The Commodores goes back to 1968 when friends McClary and Lionel Ritchie formed "The Mystics". As the group grew and expanded, the name changed to "Commodores". They were welcomed by Berry Gordy into the Motown family in 1972, eventually becoming one of its first Gold Record artists.
Both McClary and Ritchie left in the early 80s to pursue solo careers. Then, the "Commodores sound" shifted from funk to commercial pop. Three remaining members now tour with a five-piece band called "The Mean Machine". McClary's career shifted to gospel music before launching "The Commodores Experience" (above) several years ago.

Now that Thomas McClary has fully returned to his Commodores roots, he's decided to bring it to Las Vegas with this latest endeavor. BRICK House plays at Planet Hollywood's SAXE Theater every Thursday through Sunday at 8:30 pm. Tickets start at $89.95 (plus taxes/fees) and are available here.
